EuroGenomics Genotyping Microarray
Since 2013, a customized genotyping microarray designed by a European research cooperation has been deployed many times to characterize key breeding animals across Europe. Scientists working with EuroGenomics have developed the EuroG MD, available since April 2019. The combination of markers that has been selected by this group of scientists is unique!
The EuroG MD is a customized ILLUMINA genotyping microarray that contains approximately 45.000 markers: markers used in parentage verification (the ICAR/ISAG panel), and a selection of relevant markers specifically used in national genomic evaluations (markers from ILLUMINA BovineLDv2.0, the ILLUMINA BovineSNP50) and for detection of genetic characteristics (based on genetic variants).
The EuroG MD contains markers for different breeds, not limiting to Holstein: Jersey, Fleckvieh, Red Dairy Cattle, Montbeliarde, Normande, Charolaise, Blonde d’Aquitaine and Limousine.
Using this shared genomic resource increases genetic gain, makes management of genetic diversity more reliable and sustainable, and makes management of genetic defects easier. Having one highly informative genotyping microarray such as the EuroG MD furthermore encourages genotyping embryos and more animals for the development of new traits. Thereby its use helps feed a growing population, while supporting environmental and genetic sustainability of modern cattle breeding.

The development of the EuroGenomics genotyping microarray is a joint initiative by scientists from research centers and bovine genetics industry companies: Liège University (GIGA) and CRV (the Netherlands and Flanders-Belgium), Aarhus University and Viking Genetics (Denmark, Sweden and Finland), INRA, ALLICE, IDELE and Evolution (France), CONAFE (Spain), National (Polish) Research Institute of Animal Production, MCB Krasne and The Polish Federation of Cattle Breeders and Dairy Farmers (Poland) and IT Solutions for Animal Production (vit) and BRS (Germany) coordinated by VALOGENE. EuroGenomics provides the most accurate Genomic base reference to cover services over 9 million dairy cows in 9 countries.
The EuroG MD beadchips are provided by ILLUMINA with the Infinium XT (96 DNA samples / beadchip) or HTS (24 DNA samples / beadchip) technology.
