About CONAFE

CONAFE is a key player of the genetic improvement of the Holstein breed in Spain

 

At its core, CONAFE is serving the interests of more than of more than 5,500 Holstein breeders, members themselves of the regional Holstein associations in Spain, and having registered more than 740,000 animals in the Holstein breed.

CONAFE is responsible for herdbook, type recording, milk recording database management, as well as for genetic evaluations on Spanish scale. The Spanish breeders’ association also contributes to the promotion of the Holstein breed through the magazine Frisona Española and to training of the farmers.

CONAFE is encouraging genotyping in Spain and provides monthly genomic evaluations for Holstein males (14% of the genotypes) and females (86% of the genotypes). In order to support farmers with genotyping, CONAFE organizes training on interpreting genomic results, on mating programs, and promotes collection and analysis of health trait data through the I-SA program.

Since 2011, CONAFE is contributing to the EuroGenomics reference population, thanks to the contribution of four A.I. organizations in Spain:
