    EuroGenomics new EuroG MD beadchip

    2019 | 04 | 30

Starting April 2019 the EuroGenomics consortium starts using the EuroG MD beadchip. The customized beadchip designed by a European research consortium has been deployed millions of times to characterize key breeding animals across Europe. Currently, version 8 of the beadchip has been deployed. Now, scientists working with EuroGenomics have worked further to develop their custom genotyping beadchip. This has produced the greatly enhanced and expanded EuroG MD beadchip.

Two vacancies for Genetic Data Analysts at the Interbull Centre

    2018 | 11 | 19

    Exciting opportunities

The Interbull Centre is a section of the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics, SLU, Uppsala, Sweden. It has been contracted by the International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR) to be the operational unit for the Interbull subcommittee and for the Interbeef Working Group. The Interbull Centre provides genetic and genomic services and applied research for improvement of cattle to a worldwide network, involving data from 37 countries on five continents. The MACE services implemented in 1995 provide the backbone to our services, but services have evolved and improved over time. A decade of genomic evaluation and selection in the cattle industry has brought exciting opportunities to the Interbull Centre (including GMACE, InterGenomics). International beef evaluation (Interbeef) is fast developing and is including new traits, breeds and countries bringing a myriad of opportunities.

Currently the Interbull Centre is in the midst of expanding its international datahub for pedigree, and phenotypic and genotypic information. We are already well advanced with new international genomic evaluations for Holstein cattle (InterGenomics-Holstein), and enabling exchange of genetic defects and genotypes for dairy and beef, while we are also exploring novel evaluation methodologies (meta-analyses such as SNPMace).

On 1 Nov. 2018, Animal Breeding Law (EU) 2016/1012 came into effect. With that, the Interbull Centre started its new mandate as an EU Reference Centre, assisting the European Commission and EU Member States in issues related to bovine breeding and genetics and performance recording.

Two vacancies for quantitative geneticists in an International Network

The Interbull Centre is seeking two quantitative geneticists to strengthen the delivery of genetic and genomic evaluations in beef and dairy. The successful candidates will join an enthusiastic team of 8 with backgrounds in genetics and information technology. You will report to the Interbull Centre Director and work with many research institutes and evaluation centres, and some of the world’s most renowned animal geneticists represented in Interbull Committees and ICAR Working Groups.

EuroGenomics as stakeholder during GenTORE's first Annual Meeting

    2018 | 07 | 02

EuroGenomics Cooperative is one of the stakeholders in the European H2020 project GenTORE: "GENomic management Tools to Optimize Resilience and Efficiency."

    About GenTORE

GenTORE will develop innovative genome-enabled selection and management tools to empower farmers to optimize cattle resilience and efficiency (R&E) in different changing environments.

Resilience is defined as the capacity to safeguard future ability to continue contributing genes to the next generation when confronted with environmental perturbations.

Efficiency is defined as the ratio of energy in the product to the energy ingested to achieve that production, measured over a time period that is relevant to ensure that efficiency gains are sustainable.

EuroGenomics participates as stakeholder in this project to give input in the form of ideas and views regarding the research and subsequent outputs. Also, by being a stakeholder, EuroGenomics could benefit from new technologies and data. The goal is that project outputs are fit for purpose and immdediately relevant to what is happening in daily practice on cattle farms. They will be more user-friendly and thus adoprted rapidly and seamlessly by farmers and breeders.

    First Annual Meeting GenTORE

On 15-16th of May 2018, GenTORE's first Annual Meeting took place, during which the different work packages and their leaders were introduced. Special focus was on the inclusion of the stakeholders in the project and its work packages. There was the possibility to attend work package specific meetings in which the different tasks and contributions were discussed in detail. The Annual Meeting ended with an interactive stakeholder speeddating session. Time flew by during this part of the meeting when it was possible to directly interact with work package leaders to discuss where stakeholders could support GenTORE and how stakeholders in their turn could benefit from the research done within the project. EuroGenomics is looking forward to continue being a stakeholder in the GenTORE project.

If you would like to stay up-to-date on activities within GenTORE please subscribe to their mailing list here.

As stakeholder inclusion is important to improve GenTORE outcomes, it's possible to actively join discussions. If you would like to participate, please register here to the GenTORE Stakeholders E-Platform
